Dear Parents,
You and your family are cordially invited to our Spring Musical, CHICAGO: Teen Edition: a cautionary tale about media manipulation and the gaslighting of the public to achieve adoration, fame, and fortune. In CHICAGO, corruption becomes entertainment, drawing in the masses and keeping them glued to the media through sensationalism. First performed on Broadway in 1975 with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb (who also collaborated on Cabaret, a musical about the rise of fascism in Weimar, Germany in the 1930s), CHICAGO has aged into a deep reflection of our current conditions.
The play uses the construct of a Vaudeville show to tell the story. Vaudeville was an art form popular in the early 1900s, combining song, dance, comedy, magic, and circus to create a fast-paced and engaging spectacle. The antagonists Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart vie to become famous on the Vaudeville Stage, achieving their goal through corruption and murder. Pulling the strings behind the scenes of the murdress’ vaulting ambition is Billy Flynn, a trial lawyer adept at the art of blatantly lying to the public and calling it truth—and everyone falling for it.
CHICAGO is a show appropriate for students 7th grade and up, with parent discretion, due to violence, death, sexuality, and language. Tickets will be for sale at the middle and high school offices at ASFG.
