In celebration of Earth Week, as critical thinkers and community contributors, we identify systemic environmental challenges in our community and highlight strategies citizens and institutions can employ to mitigate those challenges.
For example, as of April 2025, Jalisco continues to face significant drought conditions, putting stress on water resources across the state. While federal, state and municipal initiatives are underway to address water scarcity, the persistent drought highlights the urgent need for effective water management at all levels to support sustainable development and long-term regional stability.
At ASFG, we are proud to contribute to water sustainability through intentional practices. During the rainy season, our campus topography around the new upper school building directs rainwater to a 180 m3 cistern located beneath the basement parking lot. Water from this cistern is filtered through a 3-stage process (sediment, carbon, UV light) and then used in toilets and for vegetation. Our rainwater collection system reduces our consumption of municipal water by 170,019 liters cubic meters annually.
In line with our commitment to education, environmental responsibility, and community engagement, we continue to manage water carefully during events that use significant amounts of water. The ArtFest tent, for example, is anchored by thirty 1000-liter tanks which, when the event is over, are drained into the water recuperation cistern. Likewise, the elementary school’s Children’s Day water activities are strategically located in the plazoleta so that the water runs into the cistern. This planning allows us to achieve the win-win of using water responsibly and to have fun while reusing it for our bathrooms and vegetation.
ASFG takes its environmental responsibility seriously. We invite you to join us. Whether at home or in the wider community, consider how you can reduce water waste and contribute to a more sustainable future. Small actions, multiplied by many, can help secure our water resources for generations to come.
